Text

Mothers reported whether there were medical complications during pregnancy, birth, and the first few months of the child’s life, and interviewers coded the response (1=healthy, 2=minor problems, 3=major problems). The mother’s pregnancy was considered a teenage pregnancy if the mother gave birth to the target child when she was 18 years old or younger (coded as “1”). If the mother was 19 years old or older when she gave birth, it was coded as a “0.” When the child was 5 years old, mothers reported whether the target child was born to an unplanned pregnancy, and the interviewer coded the response as “0” if the pregnancy was planned, discussed, or accepted, and “1” if unplanned.
