Since ethanol evaporates during culture incubation (Supplementary Fig. 7), we added ethanol to 20 mM and then replenished half the medium daily with 40 mM ethanol. Ethanol concentrations were measured using an AM1 Alcohol Analyzer (Analox Instruments, Ltd.) [25].
