The biological mechanisms through which maternal drinking affects foetal growth are not completely understood. However, acetaldehyde, the major metabolite of alcohol, affects the human placenta exposed to this toxic metabolite, consequently causing various problems such as foetal hypoxia, impaired cell proliferation, or delayed placental development [217].
