no history of registration for alcohol use disorder was associated with a substantial reduction in risk for alcohol use disorder, while marriage to a wife with a history of registration for alcohol use disorder increased risk beyond that observed in single men. Finally, in model 4, we added to model 3a the interaction between familial risk and marital status. This interaction was significant (hazard ratio=0.89, p<0.001) and indicated that individuals with a positive family history of alcoholism had increased sensitivity to the protective effects of marriage on risk for alcohol use disorder.
