The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) was passed by the United States Congress to address the concerns of genetic discrimination and provide protection for genetic information.97 This act forbids employers and health insurers from using genetic information to make decisions. This includes “information related to genetic services requested or received by an individual, such as counseling, testing, or education, as well as participation in clinical research that includes genetic services.97,98 A recent study on GINA in a diverse population sample indicates that awareness of genetic nondiscrimination laws is low, while perceived importance of these types of laws is high. This indicates that there is a need for public education to raise awareness about protections provided through current genetic nondiscrimination laws.99
