Tissue Specific FFA Utilization, R f*. A couple of general features in the data shown in the middle column, Figure 4, are worthy of comment. Firstly, independent of group, the magnitude of R f* varies widely between the tissues with liver values 2 orders of magnitude higher than those for the cerebellum. Secondly, a similar between group pattern of R f* was consistently seen in all of the tissues which mirror plasma FFA levels (see Table 5) reflecting the strong influence of substrate supply in driving FFA utilization. Basal R f* values tended to be higher in Obese animals versus Lean, with little effect of tesaglitazar except in the heart (which showed a lowering, normalization of R f*). In Obese, there was a widespread failure of insulin to suppress R f* in strong contrast to the situation in Lean and Tesaglitazar.
