Related to Hypothesis 1 for probands is the relationship between the alcohol challenge measure of LR obtained at an average age of 23 and the SRE scores determined at about age 37. All correlations between challenge and SRE scores in Table 1 were in the predicted direction such that a lower response to alcohol in the challenge was related to the need for more drinks for effects on the SRE. Apart from the correlation of alcohol challenge results with SRE-5 (r = −.09, p = 0.07) shown in Table 1, the remaining SRE scores correlated with alcohol challenge results between 0.19 and 0.21 (all at p < 0.001). Overall, these results are consistent with the conclusion that while alcohol challenge and SRE scores are related and both correlate with major consequences of a lower LR, these are overlapping but not identical concepts. The potential contributions of the full range of LR measures are consistent with a recent paper recommending that investigators searching for genes that might contribute to LR should evaluate each measure separately before making a decision to include
