The limitations in this study are several. First, the study sample is not representative of all SC subjects from these populations, but represents a sample of SC subjects from families where there are multiple SC cases. Whether SC in multiplex families is different from SC observed in sporadic cases is not known. The current sample is also not representative of all Latinos, as it does not include South Americans, Puerto Ricans or other Caribbean ancestry Latinos. Further studies about the relationship of SC and SUD in additional Latino populations and in more randomly ascertained subjects would be necessary to have data representative of the larger Latin American population.
