First, we tested for correlation of gene expression for all SCZ-associated genes at each spatiotemporal time-point. Genes with pearson correlation coefficients >= 0.8 or <=−0.8 were considered co-expressed. 100,000 iterations of this analysis were carried out using random gene sets with equivalent expression level distributions to the SCZ-associated genes. For each gene set, a gene co-expression network was created, with edges connecting all co-expressed genes. Networks were assessed using three criteria; first, the number of edges within the network, as a crude measured of connectedness; second, the Watts-Strogatz average path length between nodes, as a global measure of connectedness across all genes in the network54; third, the Watts-Strogatz clustering coefficient, to measure tightness of the clusters within the network54. For each spatio-temporal time point, we plotted gene-pair expression correlation (Supplementary Figure 7) and co-expression networks (Supplementary Figure 8).
