study. Additionally, due to lack of power, it was not possible to examine potential differences in the link between EAU and subgroups of individuals engaging in SA. Previous work has established that cannabis use is associated with increased odds for SA, but only for unplanned rather than planned attempts (Delforterie et al. 2015). Therefore, it may be the case that other substance use, such as EAU, may be related to certain types of SA. It is also possible that NSSI and SA were somewhat confounded in the current study, in that only about half of individuals endorsing SA reported intent to die. Therefore, future studies should examine the association between EAU and SA with intent relative to SA without intent. Finally, the current study was a homogenous Caucasian sample from Australia, so these findings may not generalize to other samples, particularly given research demonstrating differences in the association between NSSI and substance use across cultures (Giletta et al. 2012) and in the heritability of age at first drink for African-Americans and European Americans (Sartor et al. 2013).
