Note that even though the parent projects were family-based, the series of cases and controls for SAGE, and consequently for these analyses, were selected to be unrelated individuals. Of these, 1,186 cases and 1,397 controls are of self-reported non-Hispanic European-American descent. All participants agreed to share their DNA and phenotypic information for research purposes and provided written informed consent following instructions from institutional review boards at all data collection sites.
