All potential participants were initially screened in a 40-min telephone interview to establish their eligibility for our study. The interview consisted of a telephone version of the PRIME-MD semistructured interview (Spitzer et al., 1994), which screens for major mental disorders and substance use. Participants who were deemed eligible after the telephone screening were invited to attend an initial enrollment session at MD Anderson Cancer Center, during which they answered questions regarding their demographic characteristics, health, and mood history. We obtained written informed consent during this enrollment session.
