Wetherill and colleagues (2013) found differences in activation of brain regions associated with inhibitory control (e.g., frontal regions) both before and after the onset of heavy drinking among adolescents relative to non-drinking controls. Alterations in frontal brain regions associated with decision-making/inhibition have also been identified among individuals with a history of SA (see van Heeringen et al. 2011, for a review). Therefore, future studies should examine these potential mediators explaining the linking between EAU and SA.
