Fixed white adipose, liver and skin tissues were embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin/eosin (H&E) or periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) (± diastase) stain, according to the manufacturer’s protocol. Frozen liver tissues were sectioned and stained with Oil Red O. The relative adipocyte area was determined using NIH ImageJ software. An H&E-stained adipose image was captured from one slide of each of four animals per group (WT and Cyp1b1-ko, LFD and HFD) and the average relative area was calculated by tracing 50 adipocytes per image.
