Text

CA1 pyramidal neurons, which provide the major output from the hippocampus, receive direct and indirect input from the entorhinal cortex (reviewed in Basu and Siegelbaum, 2015). Subsets of CA1 neurons have reciprocal connections with the PFC and amygdala, which are respectively important for the proper function of working memory and to mediate anxiety-related behavior. The effects of alcohol on the hippocampus therefore play a large role in this drug’s amnestic and anxiolytic effects.
